Ilya Pozin, the co-founder of the popular streaming app Pluto TV, is behind the launch of a new TV set named Telly that comes at no cost. What’s special about this TV is its dual-screen display; the lower screen scrolls sports scores, weather, news, ads, and more.
The release date for Telly is this summer, and reservations for the initial 500,000 customers are now open. In addition to the dual-screen feature, Telly boasts a built-in soundbar between the two screens for an enhanced audio experience.
Telly’s revenue model revolves around generating ad income through the lower screen. It addresses the issue where consumers traditionally had to pay for both the TV set and endure ads. By offering the TV for free, Telly aims to shift this paradigm.
For too long, consumers have not been an equal part of the advertising value exchange… Companies profit significantly from TV ads, while consumers are burdened with paying for the TV and its content. This changes now. Just as Pluto TV provided exceptional TV content for free, Telly takes it a step further by offering the TV itself for free.
The television features a 55″ 4K HDR top screen linked to the second screen that runs on the new TellyOS. TellyOS manages the scrolling screens and ads that sustain the free TV model.
Although Telly does not support streaming apps like Netflix and Hulu, the primary screen has full streaming capabilities. Users receive a complimentary 4K Android TV dongle from Telly to access and use all their favorite applications.
(While sideloading capabilities are unconfirmed, compatibility with Android TV implies it should function smoothly)
The TV offers 3 HDMI inputs for connecting external streaming devices, such as the Amazon Firestick/Fire TV. Alongside the dual-screen setup and soundbar, Telly comes equipped with a built-in camera and microphone for advanced motion-tracking fitness programs and a selection of video games for all ages.
Periodic software updates will introduce features like karaoke and workout classes. However, obtaining a free Telly TV does come with a trade-off—users must share personal information and agree to interactive ads by providing data to the company, including viewing habits and interaction details.
For full details on data usage policies, refer to the Telly TV Privacy Policy.
