Word on the street is that Apple Inc. might be changing things up. They are reportedly getting ready to let users sideload apps on iPhones and iPads.
According to a Bloomberg report, the tech giant is planning a major system overhaul. This is to pave the way for third-party app stores.
For years, Apple has faced criticism for its closed-source approach. This policy prevents users from installing apps outside of the Apple App Store.
Many believe that restricting users to the App Store is unfair. They want the freedom to install apps from other sources.
Apple’s position has always been that this policy protects devices. They argue it prevents malware and viruses.
In 2021, Apple even published a detailed “threat analysis.” It outlined the potential risks of sideloading apps.

However, it seems European legislation might force Apple’s hand. They may soon have to adapt.
The Digital Markets Act (DMA) aims to prevent digital “gatekeepers” from having too much control. It wants to give users more freedom over what they install on their devices.
New European Bill May Enable Sideloading on iPhone and iPad
The DMA became effective on November 1, 2022. Companies have until March 2024 to comply.
It seems Apple has already begun making changes. It’s possible these changes could be rolled out with iOS 17.
Sideloading and third-party app stores like Aptoide are very popular. They are common on open-source devices, especially those running Android OS.
This includes devices like the Amazon Firestick and Fire TV. They are some of the most popular streaming devices around.

However, unlike Android, Apple might take a different approach. Bloomberg suggests they might implement security requirements for sideloading.
This could include a user fee to offset the potential loss of revenue. Currently, Apple receives payments from app developers in their app store.
At the moment, these changes are likely to affect European Apple users. However, the US is also considering similar legislation.
This means that American users might also see changes down the line. What are your thoughts on the European Digital Markets Act?
