AppLinked is a widely-used app. It lets you sideload free streaming apps and tools onto various devices. These include Firesticks, Fire TVs, Android TV Boxes, phones, and tablets.

AppLinked’s popularity surged after FileLinked’s shutdown earlier this year.

FileLinked was known for providing simple access to numerous APKs. Many of these offered free, but unauthorized, access to movies, TV shows, and more. This included live channels, games, and other content.

The Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE) shut down FileLinked. Afterward, three similar apps quickly emerged to fill the gap.

AppLinked, Unlinked, and FileSynced all appeared. They were competing to become the preferred side-loading app for cord-cutters.

AppLinked Security Warning

TorrentFreak, a well-known website, has issued a warning. They suggest that the AppLinked application may contain significant security risks within its code. You can find their report here.

Apparently, AppLinked was sold to a different entity on October 21st.  The new owners then released an updated version of the app. Notably, the app’s size increased by 30MB.

While it’s not unusual for code size to increase, such a substantial jump typically indicates new features. However, no such additions are apparent in this case.

More alarming are the red flags raised when AppLinked is scanned using VirusTotal.

AppLinked VirusTotal Results

We scanned the latest version of AppLinked with VirusTotal, and the results are concerning.

VirusTotal sometimes reports false positives. However, finding 15 infected files out of 63 is a significant cause for concern.

We searched online and located an older version of AppLinked, specifically version 1.0.5.

Version 1.0.5 was only 3.43MB. When scanned with VirusTotal, it showed 0 infected files out of 60.

Stop Using AppLinked Immediately

Given the unusual increase in app size and the potential malicious threats identified by VirusTotal, TROYPOINT strongly advises against using this application. We recommend uninstalling it from your devices right away.

We consistently emphasize the importance of safeguarding yourself when using third-party applications, especially those from untrusted sources. This situation serves as another crucial reminder.

A Better Alternative

TROYPOINT suggests using the Unlinked App as a safer and more feature-rich option.
