According to the official CNN press release, the new management team made the call to shut down CNN+. They are in charge of Warner Bros. Discovery Inc.
About a month ago, we witnessed the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery. This was an attempt to build a stronger combined offering.
The old management team had a different plan for CNN+
This vision was not in line with that of Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. Zaslav has always been transparent. He wants to bring all the company’s streaming services together.
This includes Discovery+ and HBO Max, all under one platform. Discovery’s streaming head, J.B. Perrette, spoke about CNN+’s quick shutdown:
“This aligns with WBD’s bigger strategy for direct-to-consumer offerings. The streaming market is complicated. Consumers are looking for simplicity and a comprehensive service. This type of service offers a richer experience and more value compared to individual options.
And for the company, it provides a more robust model to support our future investments. These investments will be in top-notch journalism and storytelling.”
Perrette followed up with a more positive outlook.
“We have thrilling possibilities ahead in streaming. CNN, a leading name in news globally, will have a key role to play.”
Reports suggest that hundreds of CNN+ employees could be out of work.
An anonymous employee shared their experience.
“Initially, everyone was quite panicked. However, as the meeting went on, panic gave way to sadness. Teams huddled together seeking support.”
What about the current CNN+ subscribers?. The company announced that “customers will get refunds for their subscriptions. These refunds will be calculated based on the time they’ve subscribed.”
