A Danish citizen has been prosecuted for his involvement in uploading torrent files. He has been ordered to pay a fine and will spend 60 days in jail.
The authorities in Denmark have intensified their efforts to combat BitTorrent users, especially those engaged in torrent operations and uploading copyrighted content. The Danish Police are actively pursuing individuals who violate online terms.
Efforts in Denmark involve not only shutting down file-sharing services but also prosecuting individuals in court. Several convictions have resulted in jail time and fines for those partaking in pirated content through torrenting.
One Danish man, described as a “Serial Infringer” and torrent uploader, was found guilty of uploading over 242 works on various torrent sites such as SuperBits and NorTor.
In addition, he downloaded 676 media files from DanishBytes between March 2021 and March 2023. These actions led to a fine of 10,000 Danish Kroner (approximately $1,000 US) and a 60-day prison sentence – consequences that are not always present in such cases.
The Special Prosecutor for the National Unit for Special Crime, Jan Ostergaard, expressed satisfaction with the verdict, emphasizing the serious consequences of illegal file sharing. Rights Alliance CEO Maria Fredenslund highlighted the preventive effect of high penalties on illegal file sharing.
There have been similar cases in the past, like Comcast being required to reveal a BitTorrent user’s identity, and Centurylink receiving a subpoena to identify torrent site users earlier this year.
It remains to be seen if these crackdowns will persist and if other countries will adopt similar approaches. Read the original story on TorrentFreak and share your thoughts on this article in the comments below!
