It’s been reported that DirecTV customers are facing higher monthly bills. This followed AT&T’s acquisition of Time Warner, which concluded back in 2018.
The New York Post recently shared some troubling figures. They reported that “Monthly rates for DirecTV customers have jumped by over 20 percent. This surge has occurred over the past 18 months.”
When AT&T acquired Time Warner, many believed cable rates would actually decrease. They figured reduced competition would lead to lower prices. However, this hasn’t been the case at all.
It’s possible that prices could continue to climb. AT&T has indicated that they will increase the cost of DirecTV packages throughout 2020, according to a separate report from the TVAnswerman.
The report reveals that “Starting in January 2020, DirecTV will implement price hikes. Most programming packages will see increases ranging from $1 to $8 per month for existing subscribers.”
In response to the criticism, AT&T is placing the blame on programming acquisition costs. They say that this is the primary driver behind the increase in monthly cable bills. In their notice to existing customers, they stated:
“We’ve had to raise our monthly prices for certain packages starting January 19, 2020. The reason for this was an increase in our programming costs. The updated pricing will be reflected on your next bill.”
It wouldn’t be surprising to see this upward trend in prices persist. More and more cable companies are trying to recoup losses. These losses have largely been driven by the increasing popularity of cord-cutting.
