Discovery’s much-anticipated streaming service, Discovery Plus, is scheduled to launch. The official launch date is January 4, 2021.
This makes Discovery the latest player. It’s joining the growing field of independent streaming services.
The official announcement came via a Press Release. The release included a statement from Discovery Inc. CEO David Zaslav:
“Over the past two years, we’ve been working strategically. Our aim has been to leverage all our advantages for the launch of discovery+. These advantages include global distribution and advertising partnerships. We also have a world-class selection of quality brands, authentic personalities, and the largest content library at launch. Plus, we have a wide range of exclusive programming…. We see discovery+ as the ideal addition to any streaming portfolio. We’re thrilled to be partnering with Verizon. Together, we’ll bring this outstanding content to their customer base.”
Discovery seems to be following a familiar playbook. It’s similar to what NBC and WarnerMedia did earlier this year. They also launched their own new streaming services.

The subscription service has two pricing tiers. It’s $4.99/month with ads or $6.99/month for an ad-free experience.

This offer applies to new and existing wireless customers. Specifically, those with a Play More or Get More Unlimited Plan are eligible.
Customers on the Start or Do More Unlimited plans also get a perk. They will receive complimentary access to Discovery+ for six months.
There’s an added bonus for certain Verizon customers. Those who sign up for Verizon 5G Home Internet or Fios Gigabit get a free year of Discovery+ as well.
This isn’t new territory for Verizon. We saw a similar move previously. They bundled Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu with their Unlimited Plans.
