The guide below demonstrates how to address any Firestick WiFi Problems using the new network tools included in the latest Fire TV devices.
One common issue reported by Firestick users is buffering, often resulting from poor download speeds.
Additionally, many users face challenges connecting their Firestick to WiFi. The new built-in tools aim to assist with this issue.
Before proceeding, ensure that these updated network tools are available for your Firestick model by checking for a system update in the About section of My Fire TV.
Locate the Check for Updates option and install any available updates until you see “Your Fire TV is up to date.”
Affected models may vary in receiving these enhancements, so it’s advisable to check system updates first. For instance, I am using a Fire TV Stick 4K Max, which has already received the necessary update.
This update seems to be accessible only for Fire OS 7 and higher at present. My standard Fire TV Stick 4K, running Fire OS 6, has yet to receive this update.
While this article contains both video and image tutorials, we recommend watching the video first for a more comprehensive guide on resolving Firestick WiFi issues.

How to Fix Firestick WiFi Issues – Screenshot Guide
Follow the screenshot guide below for fixing any Firestick WiFi issues. This complements the video tutorial.
- Hover over the Settings icon and click Network.
- Highlight the current wireless network you are connected to. Then press the play/pause button to check the network status.
- Now the first thing we want to do is click Run Speed Test.
- When the test finishes, you will notice I have 354.08 Mbps. It is also important to point out that this is on the 5GHz network of my WiFi router.
- We then cross-referenced our speed test results with Analiti Speed Test and noticed a discrepancy in download speeds.
The reason behind this discrepancy in download speeds is that all of these applications use different servers to measure that.
Note: While my download speeds work with 8K, keep in mind you only need 20-30 Mbps for streaming 4K content. Our Internet Speed Guide shows that anymore is overkill.
- Now that we’ve tested our download speeds, return back to the home screen of your Firestick and click Network.
- This time, click the Advanced option.
- You will notice the Network Quality header. We will explain what all of these terms mean to help you fix any Firestick WiFi issue.
- Signal Strength is measured in decibel milliwatts (dBm) and the higher the number, the better. For example, a signal strength of -37 dBm indicates a good connection.
- This metric indicates how strong the WiFi signal is between your wireless router and Firestick. You can enhance this by relocating your router closer to your Firestick.
Important Note: As previously mentioned, our connection is on the 5GHz band, which some routers support alongside a 2.4GHz band.
While the 5GHz band offers faster speeds, its coverage range is limited compared to the 2.4GHz band. Let’s observe the effects of switching connections.
- Go back to the home screen and select the Network option.
- While connected to Walnut-Base5-V2, the Walnut-Base is my 2.4GHz band connection. Let’s select that.
- Once I am connected to my Walnut-Base 2.4GHz connection, I will press the play/pause button on my remote.
- Click Advanced.
- You will observe an improvement in signal strength (from -50 to -37 dBm).
- Next, Noise refers to the level of background noise on the WiFi radio frequency shared with your Firestick or Fire TV Cube.
- This interference typically comes from other electronic devices and is measured in dBm, with lower values indicating a more favorable environment.
- Channel utilization is based on how full your current WiFi channel is that you’re connected to
- It is measured in percentages, with a lower number being better
- If your channel utilization is high, you can adjust your Channel Control settings in your router dashboard.
- Signal to noise ratio is the difference between your signal strength and noise level
- It is measured in a simple numerical format (0-100), with a higher number being better
- Lastly, by clicking Configure Data Monitoring, you will be taken to the following screen
- I usually keep Data Monitoring off to prevent Amazon from monitoring my device’s data usage
- However, if your internet provider enforces a data cap, this feature may be beneficial
- You can adjust your Video Quality to “Good” to help reduce bandwidth usage
- You can also set up a Data Alert, a useful feature for those with data limits on their Internet plan
- In the Monthly Top Data Usage section, you will receive details about the applications utilizing the most data
Overall, we trust this guide helped you address any Firestick WiFi concerns you might have been facing!
Let’s anticipate that Amazon will release this new update for older Fire TV devices soon.
