Harvard Law School is widely recognized. It’s known for its prestige and credibility in the legal field.
50 Harvard lawyers were asked about the legality of streaming and downloading pirated content. Their answers might be unexpected.
United States copyright law clearly states that downloading (torrenting) copyrighted works is illegal. This is a well-established fact.
We discuss this in our popular article – Is Streaming Illegal in the United States?
However, when interviewed about digital piracy, the 50 Harvard lawyers were quite tolerant of file-sharing. Many even placed the blame on large media companies.
The Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology conducted a study. One of the lawyers in the study made this observation:
“While it may be illegal, many people don’t think it’s theft. Some are comfortable discussing it professionally. I’ve even chatted with clients about TV shows I’ve downloaded.”
Another Harvard lawyer was critical of the streaming industry. He pointed the finger at big media companies:
“If there’s any restriction, I think it’s fine to download illegally. Or to use a VPN to access the content. I’m against geographical restrictions on the internet.”
TorrentFreak’s report includes several other quotes from Harvard lawyers.
It’s clear that Harvard legal professionals don’t see online piracy as a major problem. That much is evident.
The study’s researchers suggest that the industry needs a paradigm shift.
Instead of constantly trying to combat online piracy, content creators and media companies may want to consider adapting their business models. They are being encouraged to find different approaches.
