It was recently announced that Comcast, a major cable provider, is trying to block a new “à la carte TV” law in Maine. This law is a game changer. It requires cable companies to offer customers the ability to pick and choose their channels.
The law states that cable providers “shall offer subscribers the option of purchasing access to cable channels, or programs on cable channels, individually.” In simpler terms, Maine customers could select only the channels they want instead of being stuck with bundled packages.
The Central Maine reported on Comcast’s legal challenge. One of their lawyers argued the law “seeks to alter, fundamentally, the way cable service is provided.” They went on to say that “it would upend the economics of this industry.”
Comcast’s aggressive actions in this case highlight corporate control attempting to override what consumers are asking for. They are clearly fighting hard to stop this law.
If the law prevails, Maine would be the very first state in the U.S. to offer an à la carte option for cable. This would be a monumental shift for the entire industry.
Why This Matters
Here’s another example of a big cable company resisting change to their business model. Rather than adapting to what customers want, they are resorting to legal battles.
We often get comments on the TROYPOINT site from frustrated visitors who are tired of paying high cable/satellite package prices.
When will these companies realize people don’t want hundreds of channels they never watch? Why are we forced to pay for them? It’s a question many are asking.
