Netflix has officially ended password sharing for US-based customers after years of deliberation.

In a press release, the media giant stated that “A Netflix account is for use by one household”, mentioning that account holders can still use Netflix wherever they are.

For years, Netflix has hinted at stopping password sharing, citing a decrease in customer base due to multiple users accessing one account.

Subscribers likely received an email from Netflix outlining new viewing options at home and on the go.

The strict measures offer two options for users sharing an account located outside the account owner’s home.

1. Move a profile to a new paid membership.

2. Keep sharing the Netflix account with someone not at your home for an additional $7.99/month.

Both options may not be satisfactory for many subscribers who share their accounts with friends and family.

Currently, there seems to be no way to bypass these new rules as Netflix will ask you to confirm your home location when opening the app.

If you are traveling, you will need to designate your streaming device or TV as the paying member of your Netflix account.

It is unclear how this will impact Netflix users who access the platform while traveling for leisure or work.

According to the Official Netflix Website’s Help Center, device determination within a Netflix Household involves factors such as IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity.

Netflix initially tested ending password sharing in countries like Canada, Spain, New Zealand, and Portugal.

However, the approach faced criticism as Netflix reportedly lost 1 million users in Spain in the first quarter of 2023.

It will be interesting to see how US subscribers react to this major change as they increasingly shift away from paid streaming services.
