Stream Safely MPA PSA Holiday Campaign

The National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center (IPR Center) has teamed up with the Motion Picture Association (MPA) and the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE) to release two new public service announcements. These PSAs aim to educate viewers about the risks associated with watching pirated movies and shows.

We would love to hear your thoughts on these videos. Share your opinion in the comments below.

Video #1

The first video depicts a man streaming a movie ahead of its release date. His wife expresses surprise, to which he responds confidently about his methods. However, a voice-over warns about the dangers of piracy, including malware and supporting criminal activities, while burglars are shown stealing from their home during the narration.

Video #2

In the second video, Jim Mancuso from the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center cautions viewers about the risks of consuming pirated content, highlighting potential dangers such as credit card fraud and malware.

My Thoughts

We’ve been discussing the risks associated with unreliable streaming services and applications for quite some time. While the PSA videos do raise valid concerns, the fear tactics in the first video may be exaggerated. It’s essential for users to prioritize their online security when engaging with dubious streaming platforms.

Remember to avoid providing credit card details on suspicious websites, including streaming platforms. Opt for secure payment options like cryptocurrency or PayPal to add a layer of protection between your sensitive information and the service provider.

It’s also crucial to differentiate between legal and illegal services online. Unfortunately, customers don’t always have the means to verify the legitimacy of streaming platforms they encounter. Some platforms, despite being unverified, advertise on platforms like Google, creating a misleading sense of security. Questions arise about why organizations like the MPA permit such practices.

For instance, consider the sponsored IPTV service highlighted below:

Furthermore, exercise caution when sharing personal information online, especially with non-reputable sources. Transitioning to secure email services such as StartMail can safeguard your privacy by enabling the creation of aliases for interactions with less trusted websites.
