This NVIDIA SHIELD Review comes from Troy from TROYPOINT. He’s been using the device regularly for about three years.
TROYPOINT bought this device. It wasn’t donated by NVIDIA.
The second-generation NVIDIA SHIELD is a popular streaming device. It’s known as the most powerful Android TV Box available.
Not many tech products retain their value like the NVIDIA SHIELD. This Android TV Box has been a top streaming device since its 2015 debut.
NVIDIA updated the model in 2017 with the same processor. The main difference was a smaller design. It also removed the microSD slot.
They also have an NVIDIA SHIELD Pro. It includes extra storage. You can add external storage yourself for less, so we don’t recommend it.
The NVIDIA SHIELD is pricier than other devices. However, it’s a premium streaming device.
Serious cord-cutters and gamers often choose the NVIDIA SHIELD. They like its powerful specs. It might be overkill for most people, though. You could probably save your money.
What is an NVIDIA SHIELD?
Before this NVIDIA SHIELD review gets into details, let’s cover the basics.
The NVIDIA SHIELD (2nd Generation) is a powerful Android TV Box. It has tons of apps for streaming and gaming. It’s great for different types of users.
This device is perfect for several groups. This includes streamers who want an affordable Plex server. It also works for cord-cutters, Kodi fans, and gamers. And it’s great for anyone who just wants powerful computing.
Important Note: The NVIDIA SHIELD is an Android-based TV Box with a difference. It uses the Android TV Operation System (OS). Most other Android TV Boxes have the Stock Android OS.
These operating systems are different. Android TV OS is made for TV screens. Stock Android OS is designed for mobile devices.
We call Stock Android OS “generic Android”. This is because it doesn’t use the actual Android TV operating system. You’ll find Stock Android OS on most Android TV Boxes, like the X96 Max.

NVIDIA SHIELD Specs
The NVIDIA SHIELD has fantastic internal specs and features. They’re some of the best you’ll find in a streaming box. Plus, it comes with a remote that’s easy to use. The remote has a built-in microphone and it works with Google Assistant.
Here are some notable specs from our NVIDIA SHIELD Review:
- Processor: NVIDIA Tegra X1 processor with 256-core Maxwell GPU
- RAM (memory): 3GB.
- Operating System: Android TV.
- Storage: 16 GB. You can also use expandable external storage.
- 5 Ports: Two USB 3.0 slots, Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI 2.0b with HDCP 2.2 and CEC, and a power port.
- Connectivity: Wi-Fi 802.11ac dual-band, 2×2 MIMO and Bluetooth 4.1 LE
- Remote: User-friendly remote with a microphone for Google Assistant voice commands. It also has a volume slider.
- Video Output: 4K, HDR, 60fps
- Audio Output: Dolby Atmos and DTS-X surround sound through HDMI. It supports high-resolution audio playback up to 24-bit/192kHz over HDMI
- Dimensions: 98 x 159 x 25.93 mm and 250 g
Note: The NVIDIA SHIELD Pro has some extra features. It boasts 500GB of internal storage. It also has expandable storage via USB or microSD, and an IR receiver. We still think it’s better to add external storage on your own.
User Interface
The NVIDIA SHIELD TV has a fantastic user interface. It’s super user-friendly and easy to navigate.
If you’ve used Android or other Android TV Boxes, you’ll feel right at home. Navigating the NVIDIA SHIELD is simple.
Upon opening the device’s interface, the first thing you’ll see is a huge selection of applications. The Google Play Store offers thousands of apps. You’re sure to find what you need.
Android Boxes, specifically the NVIDIA SHIELD, are a great fit for people who enjoy popular paid streaming services. Think Netflix or Amazon Prime. The performance of these apps is better on Android TV OS. Stock Android OS doesn’t compare.
One cool feature is the ability to use Google Assistant on your remote. It really streamlines issuing voice commands. Check out the screenshot to see what happens when you search for movies or shows. The info is right there.
What I Like
The NVIDIA SHIELD is the top Android TV Box available. It’s been at the top of the game since its release back in 2015.
Thanks to the Tegra X1 4 processor, navigation is super fast and video playback is always buffer-free. This powerful CPU doesn’t stop there; it also makes the SHIELD a fantastic gaming platform.
The authentic Android TV operating system is a big plus. It’s designed specifically for viewing from a distance, about 10 feet away. The user interface is simple and easy to navigate. It’s a nice change from generic Android TV Boxes running stock Android.
I tested streaming 4K video through YouTube on the NVIDIA SHIELD. The performance was absolutely flawless. When I checked the Stats for Nerds window, it showed that only 10 frames were dropped. This happened at the very beginning of playback, which is pretty standard for streaming devices.
I also tried 4K streaming with my VPN turned on. Zero problems encountered!
It’s super easy to sideload apps that aren’t available in the Google Play Store. That’s a nice bit of flexibility.
Plex and NVIDIA have partnered up. They’re making it possible for you to run a home media server directly on the SHIELD.
This makes sharing media super easy. You can share across all your devices, even when you’re not at home. It’s super convenient.
If you’re a serious Plex user, you might want to consider the NVIDIA SHIELD Pro Model. It boasts a 500 GB internal hard drive.
But even if you don’t go Pro, the NVIDIA SHIELD has you covered. It supports external storage through USB ports. Pretty handy, right?
Full disclosure: I haven’t personally used the Plex Media Server on the NVIDIA SHIELD yet. But it’s definitely something I plan to explore in a future tutorial. Personally, I’m currently using Plex on my Windows 10 PC.
Netflix and Prime Video work perfectly on the NVIDIA SHIELD. You get full resolution playback without any issues. Sadly, this isn’t always the case with generic Android TV Boxes running stock Android. If you’re a big Netflix or Amazon Prime fan, the NVIDIA SHIELD might be the ideal streaming device for you.
NVIDIA excels when it comes to delivering updates for this device. The update process is user-friendly. You receive notifications for new updates, and there’s an option for automatic updates in the settings.
The included remote for the NVIDIA SHIELD is great. For sideloaded apps that aren’t optimized for Android TV, I also use an air mouse remote with a keyboard. It really enhances the experience
The NVIDIA SHIELD boasts many other impressive features. These are just a few that stand out.
What I Dislike
Sadly, the app selection in the Google Play Store is limited compared to Android phones or tablets. Google requires apps to be optimized for TV screens to be included in the Android TV store. It’s a bit of a letdown, but you can always sideload necessary apps. This offers a workaround for the limited selection.
The NVIDIA SHIELD doesn’t include an HDMI cord. Given the price, it would be nice to have everything needed for a quick setup. Remember to grab an HDMI cord separately if you’re buying one.
My biggest gripe is the high price. Most cord-cutters on a budget might hesitate to spend over $150 on a streaming box. It’s a significant investment for those seeking affordable entertainment.
NVIDIA SHIELD Review – Download Speed Tests
Download speed matters a lot. Especially since these devices handle large HD streaming files. It’s a crucial factor in this NVIDIA SHIELD review.
These tests were done with my 200 Mbps internet. WiFi testing was conducted on the 5 GHz band of my Asus AC3100 router. This ensures accurate and reliable results.
For the speed test I used IPVanish, currently the fastest VPN on the market, and the Speed Test tool in the TROYPOINT App. This provides a comprehensive assessment of download speeds.
Ethernet
VPN On: 101.7 Mbps download & 37.36 Mbps upload
VPN Off: 266.8 Mpbs download & 52.32 Mbps upload
WiFi
VPN On: 98.6 Mbps download & 32.55 Mbps upload
VPN Off: 166.6 Mbps download & 43.62 Mbps upload
If you use a VPN, the NVIDIA SHIELD is a top contender. Its download speeds are excellent when a VPN is active, thanks to its processing power. VPNs require resources, and the SHIELD handles them effectively.
Is the NVIDIA SHIELD Worth Buying?
Whether to buy the 2nd Gen NVIDIA SHIELD depends on your needs and preferences. There’s a lot to think about.
Here are some things to consider from TROYPOINT when making your decision.
Yes, you should buy the NVIDIA SHIELD if:
- You stream lots of Movies & TV Shows and need the processing power it offers.
- You use a VPN while streaming for added security and privacy.
- You’re into video games and want a device that can handle them.
- Quality and power are more important to you than price.
- You like Google products and their ecosystem.
- You’re a fan of the Android TV Operating System and its interface.
No, you should not buy the NVIDIA SHIELD if:
- The $179.00 price tag is a bit steep for your budget.
- You only stream Movies or TV Shows occasionally.
- You mainly need a streaming device for Netflix and basic streaming.
- You’re not a big fan of Google products or their services.
- You don’t particularly like the Android TV Operating System.
NVIDIA SHIELD is Overkill for Most Cord Cutters
It’s worth noting that the NVIDIA SHIELD might be more than most people need. An Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K can often do the job for much less. It’s a more budget-friendly option.
Here’s an analogy. A Tesla and my Ford Focus both get me from point A to point B. But the Tesla is definitely more comfortable, though the Focus gets the job done.
Think of the NVIDIA SHIELD as the Tesla. My Ford Focus would be the Firestick in this scenario. Both achieve the goal, but with varying levels of luxury.
