The well-known comics site, Toomics, seems to have reported its own website for copyright infringement. Apparently, this was a mistake.
Toomics is a popular website when it comes to comics and cartoons. It gets millions of visitors every month.
This premium subscription webtoon service has every genre you can think of for comics, and cartoons. It’s based in Korea.
Toomics recently filed DMCA takedown requests. These were for copyright infringement of their comics “Sweet Bitter Love” and “You Have the Wrong Person.”
The interesting thing is that Toomics’ own URLs were listed for copyright infringement. You can find this in the DMCA report from Lumen.
This was clearly a mistake by Toomics. However, it really shows how much the DMCA system is misused.
Protecting copyrighted material on the web is incredibly important. Every day, publishers and copyright holders search the Internet. They try to remove URLs from Google’s search results.
The problem is that many websites are mistakenly identified as participating in copyright infringement. These sites are taken down because of DMCA requests.
It’s going to be interesting to see how DMCA regulations change over time. Especially for these types of errors.
