Quibi has officially shut down. This happened after a mere six months of service. The announcement came earlier this week.

This mobile streaming platform initially raised over 1.5 billion in funding. Its launch took place in early April of this year.

However, they were unable to convert their free trial users to paid subscribers. Because of this, they have made the tough decision to shut down permanently.

Quibi’s main focus was on short-form videos. These were specifically designed for mobile devices.

Jeff Katzenberg, the owner, had this to say about the decision:

We knew that continuing wouldn’t change the outcome. It would simply mean spending a lot more money with no real return.

If you’re interested in reading the official statement from Quibi’s owners, you can find it in an open letter on their website.

Several factors could have contributed to the decision to close down the streaming app. The Coronavirus pandemic probably played a significant part.

Millions of people were stuck at home for extended periods. This likely had a negative impact on mobile streaming.

The company’s content was aimed at people who were “on-the-go.” This wasn’t the case for many during these unusual times.

It’s also important to consider the presence of many similar streaming services. These directly competed with Quibi.

Companies like NBCUniversal and HBO have created comparable apps, like Peacock and HBO Max. These are both included in our list of alternatives below.

The company will make a future announcement regarding when users will lose access to the app.
