Various security vulnerabilities have been identified in Fire TV Devices. These vulnerabilities extend to the Fire TV Stick 3rd Gen, one of the most popular streaming devices available today.
Bitdefender, a well-known cybersecurity firm, discovered these vulnerabilities in early May of this year. Their disclosure was a collaborative effort.
Bitdefender regularly conducts regulatory audits of various IoT hardware to identify vulnerabilities, and this includes Fire TV devices.
The issues were found in December of 2022 and reported to Amazon in the same month for resolution.
Amazon and Bitdefender worked together closely to investigate and fix the problem efficiently.
The vulnerabilities affected two Fire TV devices and two different versions of Fire OS Software, namely Insignia Fire TV with Fire OS versions before 6.2.9.5 and Firestick 3rd Gen with Fire OS versions before 7.6.3.3.
Amazon’s transparency in addressing these vulnerabilities is commendable, emphasizing the importance of device maintenance and running a VPN for enhanced security.
Bitdefender’s findings included unauthorized authentication through local network PIN brute forcing, a vulnerability in the setMediaSource function on the amzn.thin.pl service, and a vulnerability in the exchangeDeviceServices function on the amzn.dmgr service.
It’s crucial to check the software version of your Fire TV device within its settings as different devices may have different version numbers.
Locate your Fire OS software version on your Fire TV device through navigating to Settings > My Fire TV > About > Fire TV.
To address these vulnerabilities, ensure your Firestick or Fire TV device is updated to the latest software version that has resolved these security issues.
