The UK media giant, Sky, successfully took down the CucoTV website and APK file from GitHub.

CucoTV gained popularity as a streaming app for those looking to access movies, TV shows, and other on-demand content.

The app offered some legal uses, such as public domain content. However, there is a strong possibility that many users were not accessing legal content.

In a previous CucoTV Review by TROYPOINT, the following statement was made regarding the app’s usage:

“Initially, it seems that CucoTV is distributing copyrighted material without permission. When and if an application is deemed illegal, we promptly notify our users. We update reports on our website to reflect this information.”

Since Sky successfully removed CucoTV from GitHub, it’s now confirmed that CucoTV distributed copyrighted works without consent. As a result, it should not be used.

Currently, if you attempt to access the original CucoTV website (cucotv.github.io), you’ll be met with the following screen. It indicates that the website, which was hosted on GitHub, has been taken down.

The CucoTV Twitter account, ironically, is still active. It continues to post about watching copyrighted content on their platform. We discovered the website URL through their account.

In January 2022, they published a tweet highlighting CucoTV’s piracy capabilities:

Sky ultimately intervened, requesting GitHub to take down both the website and the “infringing” APK from the developer platform.

In a DMCA takedown request, the UK media company highlighted the unlawful and unauthorized content CucoTV was providing.

The official DMCA takedown notice on GitHub included the following statement:

“We are writing on behalf of Sky UK Limited, the sole owner of distribution and exploitation rights for Sky UK channels. This IPTV app, CucoTV, offers illegal and unauthorized access to Sky UK TV series, specifically Gomorra.”

Initially, it seemed that Sky’s takedown request might not succeed. However, it has proven effective.

It remains unclear whether GitHub has taken any direct action against CucoTV. However, this is unlikely to be the final DMCA request from Sky.

Interestingly, a quick Google search reveals several tutorials that appear to disregard Sky’s request. It will be intriguing to observe whether any action will be taken against these websites.

Will CucoTV Users be Contacted?

The aftermath of the CucoTV takedown remains uncertain. The situation behind the scenes is still unfolding.

In the past, some pirate app developers have been known to disclose user data during investigations. This includes streaming history and identifying IP addresses, especially when facing scrutiny from copyright authorities. Additionally, they might sell this valuable information to external parties.

It is crucial to stream only content that is not protected by copyright. Protect yourself by using a VPN.
