If you happen to be using a Free VPN, you might be surprised to learn that you could be giving app owners access to your traffic and data without even realizing it.
Sensor Tower, a company that specializes in mobile app intelligence, has been gathering data from millions of users. These users utilize popular free VPN and Ad-blocker apps on both iPhone and Android devices.
Some of these apps include Unlimited VPN, Luna VPN, Mobile Data, and Adblock Focus, to name a few. It’s worth noting that until just recently, you could easily find and install these apps from both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
In a recent move, Google decided to take down the Mobile Data app from its Play Store. Similarly, Apple has removed Adblock Focus from its App Store.
After installing these apps, users were asked to also install what’s called a root certificate. This gives the app owner access to the user’s data. Sensor Tower claims that they collect this data anonymously and only use it for their own internal products.
To shed some light on how this all works, Randy Nelson – the company’s head of mobile insights – spoke with BuzzFeed News.
Nelson clarified that their apps don’t engage in tracking, requesting, or storing any sensitive user data. This includes things like passwords and usernames from users or other apps on the device, and it specifically applies to web browsers.
Most of these apps are no longer available. This is because they’ve been removed due to violations of app store policies.
This situation serves as a prime example of why opting for a “free” service might not be the best choice. Especially when it comes to protecting your privacy and security.
This is particularly relevant when we’re talking about VPN providers. The very reason people use these apps is to enhance their online safety and privacy.
Many individuals believe they’re getting robust protection with a VPN Provider. However, a free service might actually cause more problems than it solves. For a deeper understanding, take a look at the article below:
