Warner Bros. just made a big announcement. They’re planning to make all their 2021 movies available on HBO Max. These releases will be in addition to their theatrical debuts.
This new approach to film distribution comes as a response to the difficulties faced by theaters. The ongoing pandemic has significantly impacted the industry.
This isn’t entirely new. We’ve seen a direct-to-consumer movie release before. Disney did it earlier this year with Mulan on Disney Plus.
Ann Sarnoff, CEO and Chair of WarnerMedia Studios, shared her perspective on this decision.
“We are in unprecedented times. These times demand creative solutions. This new initiative for Warner Bros. is one such solution. Everyone wants to see films back on the big screen, and we’re no exception. We understand that new content is crucial for theatrical exhibition. But, we must also recognize the reality that most U.S. theaters will likely operate at a reduced capacity throughout 2021.”
Warner Bros. had hinted at this shift. A few weeks ago, they released “Wonder Woman 1984” to theaters and HBO Max simultaneously.

How to Get HBO Max on Roku
This is fantastic news for HBO Max subscribers. They get all these new movie releases in 2021. And there’s no extra charge. It’s all included in their existing subscription.
But, it’s not such good news for movie theaters. Companies like AMC and Cinemark might be facing a serious threat. This trend could potentially signal the end of the traditional theater experience as we know it.
Traditional theaters have been struggling to stay afloat amid the pandemic. We’ve already witnessed AMC resorting to fifteen-cent tickets to attract customers earlier this year.
