What’s An X96S Android TV Stick?
Before delving into this review, it’s essential to grasp how a stick like the X96S contrasts from other Android-based streaming devices.
The X96S functions on the stock Android 8.1 Oreo operating system, as opposed to Android TV.
Stock Android is akin to the OS found on phones and tablets.
Contrarily, Android TV is Google’s tailored OS intended for TV screens, present on products like the NVIDIA SHIELD and Mi Box. This specialized TV OS isn’t integrated into this device.
Amazon features a comparable Android-based OS (Fire OS) that powers the Fire TV Stick/Fire TV, optimized for TV displays.
Devices like the X96S are often dubbed “generic Android TV Box/Stick” as they do not operate on the native Android TV OS.
These devices suit individuals who do not utilize paid services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, etc.
If those services are used, it is advisable to opt for devices like the Fire TV Stick/Fire TV, NVIDIA Shield, or Mi Box S, as they offer superior performance with apps designed for Android TV and Fire OS.
Most of these boxes are distributed from China; hence, customer support is typically limited.
The advantage of these generic Android TV Boxes/Sticks lies in offering great value due to the absence of licensing requirements, translating into cost savings for consumers.
A recommended accessory for these stock Android units is the iPazzPort Wireless Keyboard/Remote Combo, significantly aiding navigation in apps not optimized for remote control use.
What I Like
Initially, regarding the X96S’s heat production during operation – other Android TV Sticks I reviewed in the past suffered from overheating issues, consequently not making it to publication.
In contrast, this Android TV stick does not overheat as observed. In fact, it maintains a cooler temperature than the Fire TV Stick 4K.
Extensive testing, including a 12-hour continuous run of my IPTV service, revealed no noticeable temperature increase.
The included ports on this compact stick are indeed significant game changers, featuring USB 3.0, Micro SD, power (DC), and IR ports.
Unlike the criticism leveled at the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K for lacking USB/Micro SD Card support, the X96S offers both, facilitating peripheral connectivity and additional storage.
The X96S impressively handles 4K video playback, verified through YouTube streaming and USB drive playback on the device. The robust S905Y2 CPU ensures smooth handling of large media files.
The received model boasts 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage.
The noticeable speed enhancement from the 4GB RAM is evident in swift system responsiveness. Transitions between menu items occur rapidly with minimal lag; the X96S operates smoothly.
The 32GB storage capacity is commendable, allowing installation of numerous apps and download of movies/TV shows for later viewing.
Support for both 2.4 and 5GHz wireless networks on the X96S is a standout feature not commonly found on these Android devices. Internet download speeds were consistently excellent with both the VPN active or inactive, as detailed below.
The compact size of this unit is particularly appealing, facilitating convenient transportation or discreet placement near the TV.
The utilization of Android 8.1 on this stick is appreciated; personal preference steers me towards devices running this version or higher for new streaming device acquisitions.
Note: The X96S may also be accessible through diverse Amazon retailers. The specific model utilized in this review is sourced from GearBest.
The remote included with the X96S is not the best as you have to connect the IR receiver to the port for it to function. It would be helpful if manufacturers started providing 2.4Ghz or Bluetooth remotes instead. Consider using a wireless mini keyboard instead of the provided remote to enhance your experience. Additionally, I find the inability to customize the home screen launcher disappointing, locking us into the default shortcuts. Thankfully, the X96S pairs well with ATV Launcher, an alternative to the built-in launcher.
